I really don't like cutting my babies fingernails and toenails because her fingers are just so tiny. I'm alway's amazed at how fast they grow!! And when I'm nursing that's when she reminds me because she scratches - she doesn't mean to but her nails are just to long for her little fingers. So here are some tips for successful nail clipping on an infant - or at least what works for me.
*I wait until she is completely asleep - in a good slumber so that when I pick up her arm it just flops right down.
*I have baby fingernail clippers - they're around 1/2 the size of a regular size clipper and are inexpensive - I got mine at a local pharmacy in the baby section. And personally I find them much better than the baby scissors for cutting nails.
*I try to push the nail slightly away from her finger tips so that I don't cut her little fingers.
*I cut straight across and if she is still asleep I take a small filing board and just round off the sides so that they are not so jaggered. I cut straight across because I don't want her to get an ingrown nail - although I've never heard of a baby with this problem but I really don't want to be the first!
*Sometimes if I have to clip them while she is awake I will give her a bath because the warm water with help soften the nails making it easier.
*What I try not to do is pull or peel her nails off because this may cause the corner to bleed and I don't want that!!
And afterwards she wakes up happy and doesn't even know that now her nails woun't scratch her or me anymore and we're both happy!! I try to do this once a week just so it doesn't get to the point where she's scratching. Also, I think it's a lot healthier for her - don't want her fingernails trapping germs and bacteria since her fingers are ALWAYS in her mouth!!
Baby cut your nails!!
