The Australian born Hollywood actor Heath Ledger has died, aged 28 years.

One of the "Brokeback Mountain" stars, Heath Ledger was found dead in his New York apartment. Another young actor is victim to the curse of the Hollywood dream machine

The death of the 28-year-old Australian actor has been confirmed by New York Police. There are no details on how he died, but talk suggests it could well be drug related. It is understood his body was discovered by his housekeeper.

Ledger reportedly rose from being a young Aussie hopeful to an Oscar nominated Hollywood star, in a stellar nine year career at the top. He got his break and became a heartthrob in teenage movie "Ten Things I Hate About You" in 1999. Ledger went on to star in "The Patriot", "Monster's Ball", "A Knight's Tale", "Ned Kelly" and "The Brothers Grimm".

Perhaps his most challenging and talked about role was his Oscar-nominated work in the now iconic gay movie, "Brokeback Mountain", where he played a cowboy struggling with his sexuality.

Ledger has left behind a young daughter, two-year-old Matilda Rose, whose mother was "Brokeback Mountain" co-star and ex-fiance Michelle Williams.

The film industry has lost another talented heart throb, who may well have become one of the greats in years to come.

why does it happen?

That really is a shock to hear! Of course, I've also been witout a tv since Saturday. How sad. Yes, he could have gone on to do really great things. He indeed, had a great talent.

I read that, Hutt

but, then I also read that the autopsy was inconclusive. But, if he was having problems sleeping or with pain, it very well could have been an accidental overdose. It's such a shame.

Lets hope it was just an accidental thing...

for his memory's sake. There has been the odd movie star over the years - Montgomery Cliff was one of them, that I particulary liked, who shot themselves. That becomes the memory - the one that shot himself! You forget that great role he acted in.In Cliff's case it was,"Suddenly Last Summer". Donkeys years ago!

suddenly last summer

I know that movie! Some groudbreaking stuff for it's time! I remember being so over-the-top shocked at an old movie addressing a man being gay and the struggles they went through back then. And, yes. If he did kill himself, that will be the memory people have. Also look at John Belushi - his death (or, rather, HOW he died) still over shadows his career.

It is very sad...he was too young

they are doing an more thorough autopsy that will take up to seven days to get results.

They (NYC police) said there was a rolled up twenty dollar bill on the night stand by the bed, but that it didn't show any signs of having any residue on it. Now some other reporter made a statement for whatever station he works for, that the twenty dollar bill had a powdered residue all over it.
My guess is that they want to do a more thorough toxicology test before saying for sure that he may have done something like cocaine or something along those lines, mixed with any of the three perscription drugs he had on his night stand. One of those was for sleeping and the other two were for anxiety.
I never have heard anything about him having any kind of drug problems.

It hopefully will be an accidental overdose. I hope this for his family. He was a really good actor that had so much more in him, just too bad this had to happen.
