Artists Get Fat On Selling Out

Submitted by Sansietch on February 21, 2006 - 9:20am.

I suppose in some genres of music you expect the sell out by artists. Rock-n-roll was supposed to be a purist rebel kind of thing. Back in the 70's and 80's letting a car company use your song for a commercial would get you blacklisted by fans.

Today it's ok to be selling cars and pizza. Artists like Jessica Simpson could be forgiven, though not by me, for doing this. After all she's a pop star. But should we forgive The Rolling Stones?

As a starving artist I'd be stupid not to look at the deal, but don't they have enough money already? Why not just put out another album? Why not go on tour without the corporate sponsorship? I think we music lovers and music listeners need to go back to the day of hammering these big name music acts for using what they've got to take more money from the fans.

Another idea would be for the listener to stop buying and supporting these artists. Let's use this great technology we now have to find and support independent artists. Let's hear some real music and not just another song about poppin' pizza bites into our mouths.

Why so surprised? The Stones have been nothing more than a corporate board that sometimes plays music.

Why so surprised? The Stones have been nothing more than a corporate board that sometimes plays music for years now.

heh~ Jessica Simpson would be upset over that~ not as upset as Nancy Sinatra should be for that crappy remake though.

I've just written an entry pertaining to your post. It was so long I didn't want to clog up your page with it~

Here! Here! (Or is it spelled Hear! Hear!). (Or maybe Hear Here!) Anyway, stop supporting major labels! All in Favor say Aye! (Or is it Eye!) (or I)

The thing is, once an act makes it and a major label has them under their proverbial money making belt, that artist wants their fans and people in general to keep supporting them and buying their stuff. It's up to the artist to make sure they have a solid contract and can keep making a profit, along with keeping that fan base, because we all know, a major label will sell them out any way they can to make a buck, at the expense of the artist, ya know what I mean? It's a vicious circle sometimes~

Its a vicious cycle (like the poster said above) between the starving artist trying to survive and the super wealthy artist. I don't think that cycle will ever be broken. In New York City alone, there are many artists here that live between this dichotomy of starving artists working other jobs to support themselves and their art and the not starving artist who is living in good life in a big loft in Chelsea. I say, support artists that you admire whether starving or not.
