Are your kids being deprived because the Religious Right declares their hero's "unacceptable"?

American Rhetoric Review's picture

Religious extremists have decided that the Harry Potter books are not acceptable for children because they have a Homosexual (gay) character in them. Isn’t that rich! A fiction sequence of novels has been determined to be hazardous to children by the right wing Religious Right.

I find this very interesting as well as extremely revealing. First of all the books are fiction. None of the characters in the books are real. They don’t exist! Isn’t it a bit crazy to decide that something that is fictional isn’t acceptable? That’s like saying that anything that is improvable is fictional and therefore not acceptable. What does that say about the bible?

Isn’t it interesting that instead of cleaning up the messes they have within their organization with preachers, pastors, and others in positions of power and those who have access to the very children they are so worried about they find it necessary to attack a fictional character? Much like Jerry Farewells attack on Tinky Winky, the entire saga appears to be just another attempt to play with the minds of others.

They didn’t approve of the Harry Potter series to begin with because of the “mystical” aspects of the document. Compared to what? The bible?

I think the entire thing is ridiculous! Children need a bit of magic in their childhood. It’s good for the creative mind. It’s good for the “I want to understand” inquisitive maturity of their being. It also develops their ability to decipher reality from fiction…. AHHHH there’s the rub… If they develop that capability God knows what will happen… They won’t believe all the crap these hypocrites want to pump into their minds. Well that part of the mystery is solved but what other reasons would they have for attacking a Fictional Character?

I heard on spokesman for the Religious Wrong saying that kids would say that they needed to try this Gay thing out because they read it in Harry Potter. Can you imagine saying “I think I’ll try being gay” based on a fictional character? If your kids are that easily manipulated you have more problems than them “trying gay”! Talk about Paranoia! They are more likely to try “suicide bomber” based on reality!

By the way, I heard there are rumors that Burt and Ernie, Peppermint Pattie, & Bugs Bunny were all gay. At least these zealots don’t have to worry about them having abortions right?

Considering how very many kids are beaten and abused sexually by these hypocrites, the homophobia is that deeply ingrained...it is scary. But these are people that have such closed minds that they hear no evil, see no evil, and only SPEAK their evil.

American Rhetoric Review's picture

You got that right Sassys

If they don't have hate to spread they spread nothing at all because the hate pays the bills. Those organizations have been ridding on the backs of the gay and lesbian community for several years now and the cash keeps coming. Wonder what would happen if they actually preached about divorce or adultery as much as they preach hate about homosexuality? No one would be in attendance and they would be meeting in tents instead of crystal palaces. Great to hear form you, thanks for stopping by!

Charlie Brown was totally gay. That's why he was

so bad at baseball. He threw like a girl.

Here's my biggest problem with the Religious Wrong's stance on this particular issue - it is a completely and utterly uninformed stance. Nowhere in the HP books does it state that Dumbledor or any other character is gay. Sexual preference is never mentioned. In seven books, the only depiction of sexuality is in the crushes the teenager characters get on each other - boys having crushes on girls, girls having crushes on boys, first dates between boys and girls, and traditional - male/female - marriages of characters. Never, anywhere, does it ever depict even a hint of an alternate sexual lifestyle.

The author, J.K. Rowling, in discussing the behavior of Professor Albus Dumbledor, one of the major characters in the HP books, stated that he was gay and that his homosexuality is what led him to make some of the choices he made as a young man. Rowling said this in person, in front of an audience, not in print. She said this almost 6 months after the last book had been published. Prior to her statement there had never been any reason to even think about this character's sexuality. There still isn't, except after the fact, for people interested in dissecting the story and the characters. But this is an activity for people willing and able to use their intellect. Definitely not something the Religious Wrong needs to be involved in.

There is not now nor will there ever be a reason for anyone to point out to children reading these books that, "Oh and by the way, keep in mind while reading these books that Professor Dumbledor is gay."

I crossed a picket line led by the Religious Wrong when I bought my first HP book. The signs they were carrying screamed about the promotion of "Black Magic" to our children when, in fact, "Black Magic" and the people who use it are the Bad Guys in these books and the bad guys lose!

So, (while I rant on) it appears that the Religious Wrong is once again doing what it does best, jumping to conclusions, making snap judgements ("Judge not lest ye be judged" not being that part of the bible that they read, I guess), creating hate and discontent without all the facts. "Facts? We don't need no stinking facts!!"

Poor Dumbledor "outed" with out having any fun!

These people need to get a life. It's just more of the same over and over again with them. Anything to stir the pot of hate because it fills the mailbox with checks to “fight those evil gays”. "Keep the dollars flowing it is the only way we will win the battle against these evil vile homos” What a crock!

Dag, you have to bust on Charlie Brown, PW?

He wasn't gay; he was probably the most manly kid in that comic, which wasn't saying much overall.

As to the rest, I have to admit that having Dumbledore be gay has definitely started to clarify that last book a little bit for me, but I'm with you in saying that, since it was never a major point in any of the stories, who really cares one way or another?

Reviews of Everything, reviews and opinions of, well, almost anything!

Well PW someone has to allow them

Sassys

to get their rocks off somehow...I believe it's a major turn on for them to dwell on the supposed depths of depravity they see EVERYWHERE. To them the color purple is a "Gay" color...now who the hell attaches sexuality to a color? It's their contention that we are all sinners and we are all going to hell...well if that's the case, then I plan on getting there wearing a purple condom attached to my mouth...no wait that spot is already taken by Falwell!

Pussy Willow's picture

Falwell is gonna be attached to your mouth?

Oh god, call before you arrive (woulda said "come" but....) cause I just gotta see this! LOLOL!!!

Hey! They can get their rocks off anyway they want - as long as it doesn't interfere with the rest of us. After all, we don't bug them when we get our rocks off. Ewwwwww! How the hell would you ever get your rocks off if you had to involve them?

As for everyone but them going to hell - if where they are going is heaven then send me to hell, baby, cause I don't want any part of that kind of heaven.

We shall dwell in Hell together PW!! :)

Sassys

The way people skew the bible just amazes me...to begin with it is a BOOK...and it was written by MEN...I think I will rewrite the Bible, call it "Sassys Big Book" ugh.

Pussy Willow's picture

Sassys and Pussy Willow in hell together. If that isn't

heaven then there ain't no such thing! LMAO!!!

Did anyone watch the Southpark Imaginationland episodes? Jesus was in Imaginationland - a place reserved only for characters of the imagination. And, much to my disappointment, I haven't seen a thing from the Religious Wrong about it in the news today. Dang!!!

It's stupid

I LOVE Harry Potter! I mean really LOVE the kid! He's done what others have failed to do - GET KIDS TO READ! Isn't that a wonderful thing??? Of course, those in Religious power must find fault and overlook the obvious that I just pointed out!
What she REALLY should have done was make the character a gay, Jewish, over wieght Black guy! Talk about creating a lot of tolerance in our youth in one swoop! And, how much you wanna bet they'd overlook all but the gay part?????

They are equal opportunity haters Spooky

They would only talk about the gay part but believe me they are plenty upset about anyone who isn't an "Arian From Darien with Braces on their Brains" Look at all the BS over immigration. I’m not saying I approve of illegal’s in the USA but as long as our government hires them and there are no consequences for anyone else hiring them you can’t blame them for coming in now can you?

Now I'm truly in love, AR!

Today, I hope, will be a great day! But, seeing an actual quote from 'Auntie Mame' makes it great no matter what! I'm sure you know that I aspire to be her! LOL
Ya, they would have issues with all of it, but like most of them, they'd keep the other stuff for private conversations. The most horrified I've ever been regarding race and bigotry was in Philadelphia. I'm so light skinned that I easily passed for white out there. And, due to that I was included in conversations I never knew existed among educated people! If I had a dime for every "fucking Russian JEW!" or "Nigger" or "faggot" or "whatever" that I heard, I'd be richer than Trump!
As to illegals, I had that conversation not long ago. No, I don't blame them at all. They are coming from poverty stricken countries and a lot of them are also fleeing for their lives. What I do blame is our government for making asylum so hard to get and the qualifications for a Visa so hard to get! If we're gonna be the leaders of the free world policing everyone - we should then fullfull the other duty of making room for those we "save"!

Illegals are here because we hire them....

If there were no jobs they wouldn't come across the border.

Aunti Mame is my hero!!! She is everything I would live to have in a family member.... Un lie the "ups and Downs" crowd I got stuck with! LOL

Bigotry is alive and well we have just taught the bigots how to hide it better and how to discriminate more effectively. EEOC and AACP and the rest of these have been gutted by the right. Equality is now a fading light of our past... Under GWB we have back peddled 50 years. And still most are asleep and don't know what hit them...

What really upsets me, AR

is being out in the world, talking with different types of people - all of them saying either they don't care if someone's gay or that though they don't approve (for whatever reason) gays should have the same rights as everyone else. But, then I see how overwhelmingly, people vote against legalizing gay marriage! I just don't get it! I guess it's just easier to lie and then go the other way. People suck.

I have wanted to be Mame Dennis for so many years now that I forget how long! I've even been known to drop the "top drawer" line on folks! Obviously, when I use it, I use it in Mame's definition ~ as in the opposite. *sigh* if only we could have even one relative like her!

As religious people

they are suppose to use the bible as guideline for thier life. Everytime I hear something like this drives me crazy because I was raised in a religious household. We took the bible as serious business. Yes, we were raised to think of homosexuality is not in God's plan but so a is alot of other thigs that they choose to ignore. Didn't anyone learn from the "Tinky Winky" thing.

American Rhetoric Review's picture

I'm not anti Religion....

I'm with you STEP, I have to disagree on the part about not in god plan... Neither was a lot of things but in fact ancient versions of the bible had many references to what we now refer to as "gay" relationships. Of course those versions have been revised by men with their own bias and hate so today we have bibles that liken the haters’ thoughts to those of god.

Funny how they don't spend all this time ranting about divorce, adultery, lying, lust or lets see.... Any of the Ten Commandments maybe. of course that would result in the money stopping to flow and the crystal palaces being built.... Therefore carry on with the hate... We can’t really rely on the word of god to crate that mass income now can we?

I am defintly anti Religious Right meaning most organized religion.
