Are you "represented" in government?
Unless you're a white, English-speaking, balding, overweight, profit-minded, capitalist, smirking, Christian, self-righteous, neoconservative warmongering straight male, chances are that you're not.
Perhaps I'm being hypercritical. After all, as a young, vibrant, sexy anarcha-feminist gender-abolitionist quasi-Marxist lesbian intellectual, I can hardly hope to have my needs and wants reflected in a government based on the majority. Minorities like me--and most likely, like you--are S.O.L. in this system.
These elected officials, whom our tax dollars pay for "representing" us—make choices that do not reflect the wants and needs of the American people. Let's take, for example, the controversial Patriot Act. This piece of legislation basically gives the government free access to information heretofore considered private.
There are those who defend this act as a legitimate counterterrorism effort, saying, “If you are an innocent citizen, what do you have to lose by allowing the government access to your personal information?
