ARE YOU HAVING A STAY-CATION OR ARE YOU TRAVELING THIS SUMMER?

ammorton's picture

So, are you going on a vacation this summer? I think the new thing families are doing this summer because of rising gasoline costs, are having a staycation as they are calling it.
A stay-cation is where you take your vacation, but your just staying at home lounging, or doing whatever at home. Gee, seems like that's nothing new to me, that's how I spend my vacations anyway.
With the cost of gas so high now, it is nearly impossible to afford nice vacations when half your spending money or more, is going into the gas tank.
I work at a convienance store. We do it all, gas, food, lottery, just about everything, and I worked over fourth of july, and this year compared to last year...we were alot slower than the norm.
I mean, dont get me wrong, we weren't dead, but we weren't doing the business we have done in the past and I have been there for 13 years now.
I am hearing this everywhere I go too.
People are not going anywhere they dont have to go, just simply because they cannot afford to.
Just today I heard someone say it was too expensive to go to the bar for a couple of beers for two people.
It shows me that people are really thinking out what is important and not so important and having to make the choice to do it or not.
I really dont do much anyway, especially when it comes to traveling, mostly because we could never really afford to, so it doesn't seem so bad to me, but these people that are used to getting to travel where ever, when ever, and now they cannot.
Times are getting tough, and gas is just one of the things that is truly affecting all of us, food, utilities, everything is getting so high and hard to afford.
I am getting ready to use some vacation time in a couple of weeks. Am I going anywhere, no, just trying to use up my time before I lose it. The only thing I need gas to do is go into Kansas City on August 1st to the City Market where they are holding a concert for a DJ's 15th year on the radio with this same station. Judas Priest is the headliner for this, so we are forking out the gas to see this because more than I, my hubby is a major fan. Other than that, I wont be doing anything but hanging out at home, getting visits from my girls on a daily basis for food...yes they think my house is their grocery store.
At any rate, for those of you who are lucky enough to afford a vacation away from home, kudos to you and enjoy it thoroughly, and for those like me who will be at home, which isn't such a bad thing really, hope you find time to just hang out and relaxe, listen to some great music, do what ever your little hearts desire, after all it ain't costing you anything, right?

Well hell Ammorton

http://bloggerparty.com/blog/sassys

Sounds to me like your "Staycation" is more like a "Vocation"...But I agree with you ..staying home can be just as relaxing and no one says it can't be fun too...hell have a party and invite some good friends over and chill! Poker anyone? Or spooky movie night...lots of cool things and even if you can't hear, smell or touch the ocean...you can prepare for a killer vacation for next year!

Well, bottom line is

vacations have never been a luxury that we could afford with three kids to raise, and now that they are raised...hell, we still cannot really afford it. I just feel a little bad, ( not a lot..haha), for those that are used to doing this every year, and not being able to now is probably not setting well with them. I guess if I win the lottery sometime soon, before next summer...lol, we could squeeze in that little trip to Hawaii or the Bahamas...and leave it to me to want an extravegant vacation..lol. But any where near the ocean and the beach is fine with me.

Yeah I hear ya Ammorton

I gave up on vacations myself quite awhile ago. Instead of saving to go somewhere exotic I find myself saving to get to the grocery store:(
At least there is one positive thing about this (sort of) it is forcing Americans to spend money in America...instead of in Europe. But it should be a choice, instead of a forced thing.

I had nothing, Ammorton,...

but "staycations" since 1998. My wife and I go to our business conventions, together or separate, and the rest of the year we're just having our daily or weekly fun around the area. Our last trip anywhere was a day trip to Niagara Falls, about 3 hours or so away, and that was a fluke because we missed the turnoff for Buffalo. And that was two years ago, when gas was around $2 and we were thinking how much money we were wasting on gas; wow!

But I like being home, so no problems on my end.

Niagra Falls would be cool to see

I actually have many places in the US that I would want to see, but affording that gas...man it's rough. Ya, it's not to bad just hanging around the house, the girls are here, in and out, so we just hang with each other, have a BBQ about once a week, my hubby and I ride the motorcycle to the lake, and wherever else we decide to go on his day off, so it really isn't such a bad deal for us either.
Even the motorcycle takes roughly 9.00 to fill...I never have seen that before. He just has what they call a peanut tank (2 1/2 gallons)but we can get alot of miles out of a full tank, 75 I believe.

You're close enough, Ammorton,...

to go to the Negro Baseball League Hall of Fame and the Jazz Hall of Fame, which is pretty neat in its own right.

You know your right Catfish

It's been there, what, three years now, and I haven't seen it yet. I do want to go and look at all of it. I heard it's pretty awesome!! We also have that show "Bodies Revealed" in the Union Station. I'd like to go see that, but I heard it's kinda pricey.

My wife wanted to go, Ammorton,...

while it was still in NYC, but we never got the chance to get it done. But we're still close enough to get it done eventually, if it comes back.

Barrels are passe, Hutts,...

who can find a barrel anymore? I'm trying to remember what the last guy who tried it went over in. He survived, then went to jail for about a year; not worth it, if you ask me.

Judas Priest, Ammorton!!!

Oh, man, I LOVE them!!! Hope you have a blast.

I actually prefer staying home on my vacations (and I really hate the new "staycation" coinage). I mean, heck, I work all year long taking care of my house and yard and paying for it. When I have some time, I like to be able to stay home and enjoy what I've worked my guts out for.

I have gone away a few times on special trips, when I could afford it, but that hasn't been often and I've never really felt underprivileged because of it. Frankly, I don't have much sympathy for all those people who feel they have to "go" somewhere. Most of the people I know that do that don't ever really have a spectacular time - they just go because they think that's the thing to do - go, go, go. Now that they are being forced to stay home and enjoy their homes and their families, maybe they will find that they have really been missing out on the best vacations of all.

Oh I will PW....I haven't been

out to a concert since Aerosmith and Motley Crue about two years ago, and I am more than over due for this. There are acutually three more bands playing before them: Drowning Pool, Jackyl, and a local band called Federation Of Horsepower. Even my hubby is excited about this one...it was actually more his idea to go cause he love Judas Priest. There will be an abundance of motorcycles and leather.

Ya thats what I was saying...most people go on vacations because it's just what you do...it is more routine than anything. I have actually seen people get stressed out trying to figure out where they are going to go and act like they are on a timeline for it all...it's like "hurry up and go so we can chalk up another fine vacation". I just dont care really. It will be nice someday to actually go somewhere, but until then I'm good.

Pussy Willow's picture

Yeah, I've never understood what pleasure people get

out of vacations where they work on time tables and stuff. Shoot! I'd get worn out just planning the thing. I went to Puerto Rico once and it was fabulous and I'm sure my friends are sick of hearing me talk about it. It was a very special vacation and worth all the money and time and effort it took but I sure wouldn't want to do that every year. Maybe every 5 years, if my finances would just get back in shape. But, like you, if I don't get to go anywhere like that again, I'm good. I like sitting out on my back porch every morning for a few days, drinking coffe and just being lazy.

LOL! I'm guessing both you and your husband will be in your cups at that concert. I like Drowning Pool, too, if they're the ones I'm thinking of. I'll have to go dig through some of my old cassettes.

In your cups?...Not sure PW what that means?

I am blonde...lets not forget that...lol. Actually Drowning Pool is more a heavy metal group...they have the song "Bodies" which if you watch wrestling...they play it, or at least they used to.

Pussy Willow's picture

LOL!!! Ok, Blondie!

In your cups means being very happy with your situation, like it "fits you to a T" or something like that. It also means being drunk but I didn't mean it that way, I swear!

I don't watch wrestling but I think I've got at least one of their tapes. I used to date a metal-head. Looooong story. He sure was fun, though.

ammorton's picture

OK...I get it now..

I first thought you meant being drunk, but I thought no, mabey not, so I thought I would just throw it out there that I didn't know...lol.

I dont drink either, and my hubby wont if we are at a concert together.
But ya, I will be in my element so to speak...I love the concert scene. Well good then you do know who I am talking about. I love their music, but will be steering clear of any moshing going on, that I dont do. Fun to watch, not interested in partaking in it.

I would love to hear the story about the metalhead you dated sometime...sounds interesting...
