I thought I'd do this just for fun. I've lived and worked with my share of pranksters long enough to either lose my sense of humor completely or develop a really warped one of my own. Anyway, being the history nut that I am, I thought I'd share with you where April Fool's Day came from (one explanation, that is), and for those of you still looking for pranks and jokes to play on friends and family, I'll post a few links with some suggestions.
There are a number of suggested reasons for the celebration of April Fool's Day. This one is my favorite. In 16th century France, New Year's Day was celebrated on April 1st, a celebration that actually began on March 25th. However, in the late sixteenth century, Charles IX decreed that the New Year would begin on January 1st. However, since information didn't travel all too quickly then, there were many who hadn't heard the news and celebrated on the first of April. These people were called April fools and were fair game for those wanting to send mock presents or other hoaxes.
