Another question for the ladies...replies wanted

This morning I was watching Mike & Mike in the Morning on ESPN2. It's a great show that I recommend everybody watch if they like sports. Anyway, they were talking about Maria Sharapova. She is a female tennis player who has won like one or two majors and she is hot. She is not just hot, she is really hot.

Anyway the question was brought whether she should be offended that people (men) bring up her looks whenever her name gets mentioned. Like I said she is an accomplished tennis player. We're not talking about Anna Kournikova here, Maria actually has game.

Well I'm bringing this same question to the women here at bloggerparty.com. Fellas please feel free to weigh in also. I want to know whether or not all women get offended by this or if women don't care. I don't want this to be just about Maria Sharapova and other beautiful female athletes. I want to know if a female account (or any other profession/career) would get mad if I said "she is a damn good CPA and she's hot."

This is my attempt to further understand the opposite sex. Trust me I need all the help I can get, so please let me know how you feel.

I honestly can't say I speak

I honestly can't say I speak for women on this one, but I can sorta see how a woman might be offended by it.

It's like girls all day have to deal with men, usually in positions above them-so they want to be recognized for their ability.

The thing is, we all know in this society a hot woman can get just as far as a smart/talented woman.

So even you say "she's a damn good cpa" then follow that up with "she's hot" its' almost a backwards compliment.

Of course..i could be 100% wrong..in which case I'll shut my mouth on this issue.

backwards compliment?

Why is it a backwards compliment? Why isn't it two compliments? I've acknowledged her skills/abilities as a CPA and I also commended her good looks.

Would it be different if I said "wow she is hot. And she is a great CPA"?

i was just about to leave

i was just about to leave from work. gotta hit the gym but real fast-

What i mean is that we say Pam Anderson or Jessica Alba is hot.

Sometimes in their hotness we're willing to look past their flaws-Jessica Alba for all her hotness isn't really a good actress yet, she continues to get work(and honestly is in two of my fav movies from last year.)

If Jessica alba wasn't as hot as she was, she probably wouldn't get the roles she does. But because of her hotness and the roles people(mostly the media) have to say "she's a good actress and beautiful etc."

So when a woman comes along that is actually talented AND beautiful, by pointing out how pretty she is, it's almost like grouping here with talentless hot chicks who have made it as well.

I hope that makes sense-im rushing.

Thorniest Rose's picture

It must happen often, so it gets annoying and she feels..

minimized, her achievements seemingly coming second to her looks - for which she cannot take credit.

I have the same problem, what can I say, and it can be a drag.

JKRowling gets testy about this as well. She recently blogged about how, when catching up with an old friend, she was mortified, even angry, that the friend was impressed with Rowling's slimness rather than her having given birth to a child and another book during the interval they had not been in touch

It's nice to get compliments on one's looks, even boorish ones sometimes, but when it ends up being the focus of the attention, you feel like a piece of furniture.

thats my two cents
cheers

This is the belligenert, bombastic blog!
Opinions, Ideas, I got a ton of 'em

Drake & Rose

I think I understand what Drake and Rose are saying. This is not to say that I agree with them. I feel like Pam Anderson and Jessica Alba realize that they are not good actresses. This is why I brought up Anna Kournikova in my original post. She was hot but she wasn't a good tennis player. The point i'm trying to make is that women know when they are good at what they do, don't they? If they do know that they are good at what they do, why would they get upset about someone complimenting there looks?

As for JK Rowling, to me it would be surprising that a woman who has just mothered a child and written a novel (presumably these events happened rather close to each other) would have time to hit the gym and lose that pregnancy weight.

im not saying it's right-I

im not saying it's right-I agree with you- If a woman told me i was the best damn billing clerk this side of the mississippi and she thought I was hot, I'd be like "damn..i should marry her."

but thats just how things go. For so long women have just been objectified for sex objects that it seems they want to distance themselves from that in the work place at least.

I guess i just know that cuz I understand women...=)

I think no matter what women

I think no matter what women say they want to feel attractive and sexy. We all want to feel attractive to the opposite sex. Call her ugly and see what happens.

It's funny, I think on average hot chicks want to be considered something other than hot while girls who are not hot want to be the opposite.
