Another Embarrasing Parenting Moment...

ModelMom's picture

So I am standing inline at the post office today hoping and praying my son doesn't knock something or somebody over as he runs around and around the line when I notice a man get in line behind me. And my son, of course, notices the man too. This man in particular was someone who was vertically challenged (and I really don't want to offend anyone, just not sure what the PC term is....dwarfism?) and definitely stood out in the crowd.

I knew I was in trouble the minute my 2 year old caught sight of him and walked right up to him with a huge grin. He thought he had found a buddy. So he smiles a few more times and waves and really stares at the guy (all the while I am trying to inconspicuosly get my son's attention so that he would stop staring to no avail) and then he says "hi nino!" which in Spanish translates to "hi little boy!" And as luck would have it, this gentleman happened to be Mexican American. Fantastic.

I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me whole. But my kid is only 2 and totally innocent and really thought this guy was a child. He probably stared at him for so long sicne the man had a goatee and so does my husband and he has never seen another kid with facial hair before, so it must have thrown his little toddler mind off for a bit. Anyways, I just felt awful for the man. But he ended up smiling back at my son and giving him a high five and playing peek a boo until we left. It was cute and sweet.....but still embarrasing!

Modelmom, I think EVERY kid

IntricateGirl's picture

Modelmom, I think EVERY kid who has ever met a little person has done this. Most little people accept that kids don't mean any harm and are approaching them in a friendly manner. And given the way adults can act sometimes, that friendly manner may be welcome.

I know it's mortifying, but I wouldn't sweat it.

it was actually pretty cute when i think about it and the man was so sweet and playful with my son that it all ended up just told my mom about it and she said i did the same thing at 18 months when i saw a small person & said loudly "look, mama, a tiny tiny man!". my son isn't an early talker like i was, so i wont worry about the comments....yet! lol!

I'm just waiting...

My son is very verbal and pretty outgoing, so I'm preparing myself for major embarassments. So far, I've been lucky. The only thing he's commented on was a woman with no teeth and he did it privately rather than publicly. We caught a glimpse of this woman and her dog (both old) before we went into the bathroom and in the bathroom he said, "Does she have teeth?" I hadn't gotten a good look at said woman so I said, "The woman or the dog?" He said, "The woman." I said, "Well, I think so, but if she doesn't we aren't going to say anything about it." We left the bathroom and sure enough, this chick has like one tooth in the front. But he never said a word. Whew!

i have to remember how you handled this with your son. mine is slow to talk so i am not worried about his making any comments yet. he's learning both spanish & english simultaneously so he still cant string together too many words....but i'm sure when he is able to i am gonna need to handle it as gracefully as you did! your son sounds really mature and well-behaved for his age. you done good!

Aw, you guys are so sweet

I didn't expect to be complimented for this but I'll take it, lol!
Thanks!

I hope he can be gracious on his birthday coming up. His party is Saturday and it's a big one with lots of family and friends at a nearby park. I hope he's good about the gifts... He could easily say that he doesn't like something. I think I'll start talking to him about how to behave when that happens soon.

He's so smart about so many things, but I can't get him to reliably pee on the john. Kids are weird!

Brenna, I think you could

IntricateGirl's picture

Brenna, I think you could not have handled that ANY better. I mean, that was the perfect thing to tell him.

My daughter started telling my son's teacher about her two grandmas. She has an "old grandma and a young grandma," which is true. One is old enough to be the other's mom. Not seeing the disaster that was coming, she tells the teacher that her hair looks like the "old grandma's." Ugh. The teacher smiled and said that she loves the ways kids are honest and will just say anything on their mind. And then my daughter begins following her around talking about it, which leaves the teacher defending her hairstyle. I kinda stammer to my daughter that yes, both of them have very pretty hair, RIGHT?!? My daughter says yes, but still...

Aw, thanks!

It was probably just luck that he didn't say anything about it after I said that, but still :)
