Another Diabetes Lesson To Learn

diabetes | indian movies | kangana ranaut

Around 5PM, my wife and I went to the park for a walk. I wanted to have a very long walk, a super long walk, because we're on a new eating program to lose weight, and I have grown to accept exercising in my life.

She said that the temperature at the present time was 87 degrees, but it didn't feel that way to me. One of the best things about this time of year is that, because we alternate very hot and then cool days, we don't have much humidity just yet.

So we started out, beautiful area, from a point about half a mile or so further than we usually start from, and things seem to be going well. When we hit the point where we usually turn around, I recommend we go further, to this new part of the park that I just learned about a week earlier, that I wasn't sure she'd seen.

When we get to that part, where there's a new little information center, she says she has to go to the restroom, and I decide to get some water. As I try to lean over, I notice that my legs are really shaky. I get my drink anyway, stand up, and realize the rest of me is a little shaky also. So I sit down and wait for my wife to come out. She does come out, asks me if I feel okay, and I said I wasn't sure; time NOT to be macho, I figure. So we sit for about five minutes, her plying me with water, and I think I feel better, but I'm not sure. We'd walked 50 minutes, though, so to get back to the car was another 50 minutes; no options in my mind.

However, I did decide to try to go to the bathroom before walking back, and my wife talked to the woman in the info booth, who mentioned that the tram they have at the lake was going to be leaving soon, and maybe I should ride that. My wife suggests it when I come out, but now macho is coming back, and I say I can do it. Well, about 100 yards was all it took to realize that I probably wasn't in condition for another 50 minutes, over 3 miles away. So I let her get me on the tram, which is really only a truck pulling two covered wagons (best I can come up with for a description) behind it, but modern, with nice seating and music piped in. And we ride back, with this other couple where my wife knew the woman because they both work at the same place, and this 2 year old they had decided to bring to the park with them, the cutest thing.

We finally get to the car, where we had to walk about 200 yards to get to, and I ask her to drive because I didn't want to take any chances. I still felt a little off, so when we got home I decided to lay down for about 10 minutes. After that, I decided to check my glucose levels.

Now, if you don't know, normal is 80-120, though it used to be 140. I've been riding high lately, around 200, but over the last couple of days, on the new eating plan, I'd gotten back around 140 - 160. Well, when I tested myself, I was at 44; that's right, 44! Okay, way not good, so I go into the other room, start plying myself with liquids, and my wife gives me a piece of ham from the large omelette she's making for dinner; that's on the plan.

I eat, and part of me starts feeling better, but another part of me still doesn't feel okay, and as I sit here, many hours later, I'm still feeling it. It's this overheated thing. I've never had this in my life before, but I'm betting a part of it is what sunburn is like. I feel heat radiating from within me, and the fan can't seem to touch it. I'm not sweating, just really uncomfortable; my wife says she's feeling the same thing also. She's been having problems staying asleep, and I know she's uncomfortable; it's 1:15AM, and I probably won't go to bed for another 45 minutes at least; yeah, I'm nuts. My skin feels tender, but I'm not in pain, just uncomfortable. I'm betting some of you have had this. Since I don't tan, I don't sit out in the sun ever, so maybe I'm not overly used to it. Oy!

So, just another danger that diabetics, and probably other people in general, need to watch and try to protect themselves from. Guess I'd best start paying attention to the temperature, eh?

Watch that sun Catfish

Hi Catfish, don't think the sun can't get you because you're black. In my teens my family were invited to go down to the coast with Aboriginal friends, a whole busload. Guess who got sunburned? They did. We obviously spent a lot more time in swimming pools and in the sun than they did and their skin's protection hadn't built up. It amazed us, new Scottish immigrants who had hardly seem a black man in our home country.

Maybe you had a touch of sunstroke. If your head was uncovered and it was hot it's pretty likely. I think it's to do with the brain getting a little overheated. I've had it and it made me woozy in the head and sick in the stomach and feeling really hot. A lot like the symptoms of hypoglycaemia but not the temperature. Maybe you had both at the same time. We use a different scale for measuring the sugar so I don't know how bad your levels are. I'm more prone to error at the other end by excessive snacking so I've never had a hypo.

Take care and carry glucose sweets for a quick fix. (So who am I? You're uncle or something? Naaah.)

Thanks xingtiao,...

I have to say that I just need to pay more attention to some of these things, which I didn't when I was much younger. I don't like hats, or anything on my head, but maybe I have to get over that also. And I'm on an eating plan this week that precludes any extraneous stuff, but I still should have taken very cold water with me and made sure to stay hydrated. That's what I'm going to make sure I do as I move on.

sounds awfull, catfish

Sorry to hear your nice walk ended so badly. Good thing the tram was there to help!

Catfish's picture

For sure, spooky,...

though, if I'd had to, I guess I'd have had to just "man" up and get it done, eh?

Catfish, I wish you'd tell your doctor about this.

My grandmother was diabetic and she had to build up to exercise slowly. But she did have what she called insulin shock several times because she didn't eat enough when she was exercising or even just working extra hard in the kitchen - like on Christmas dinner. She'd have to sit down and drink some juice or eat a peice of candy. This sounds like what you had - insulin shock.

Might be a good idea to carry some hard candies with you when you walk.

But I'm so proud of you for taking your exercise so seriously. My pudgy little body is no longer quite so pudgy and I'm even getting some tone back into it since I started back with my exercise program - and cut out the Chocolate Fudge Brownie Ice Cream - and the chocolate cake. Damn - I sure do miss that stuff.

Well, PW,...

I thought I had taken care of it by eating before I left. However, it was very lean turkey burgers, no bread, and it really doesn't have a lot of energy content to it. And, with this eating plan I've been on, hard candy would have messed it up. If this thing does what it's supposed to do, I may write about it next week. But it does open my eyes to be more careful, as, more than 24 hours later, I still have flare-ups of heat on my body. Now that's freaky!

Catfish PW is right

Sassys
You need to quit playing doctor and "guestimating" what and why. Go to a doctor! This could have nothing to do with the weather.

Catfish's picture

Here's the typical guy answer, Sassys,...

I'm not going to the doctor. My wife asked me also, and I know this would just be a waste of $100. Friday morning, and I'm just fine, doing very well. I had a down, but it was a fluke. I've had maybe 4 or 5 major drops in glucose in 10 years, but the heat thing was new to me. So, yesterday we didn't walk, as it got to 88 again, but yesterday was also very humid, more of a central New York kind of day, with an ozone warning to boot, so I'd have known better way before going out.

Water, cold water,... I'll be prepared from now on. But thanks for worrying. :-)

Catfish, your diet may not be geared to that level of

activity. Your doctor would know what would be appropriate to do in that situation. And yeah, I get it that we aren't going to talk you into going to the doctor. But, sooner or later, you will see one, so promise me you'll mention it to him.

As for the heat - you don't catch me out walking in 87 degree temps with high humidity and I'm not diabetic - just a wuss. I stay inside and do Pilates and work out with the dumbells (no cracks about "good company," now).

As for keeping your temp down - I'll see if I can find these things for you and send you a link - it's a kind of neckerchief that's filled with some stuff that holds water and doesn't get you wet. You soak it in water, wring it out, wear it around your neck and it keeps you much cooler in the heat. I've got a couple of friends that use them and they swear by them. I need a couple myself. Getting too old and wussy to mow the grass in 100+ temps any more.

Thanks PW,...

but just to clarify, the first day it wasn't humid at all, and I just never felt any heat, which I guess may be one of the first signs after doing some research, because my wife kept telling me it was hot. These last couple of days, though, it's been really humid here, which is our norm, so I've worked out in the house instead.

I wasn't sure whether my diet was good or not, so I went online to research it, and I couldn't find a single bad thing that anyone had to say about it, and two diabetics talked about losing weight on it. However, my wife and I have decided we're stopping it for tomorrow because it's just not conducive to doing other activities, and we're both going to be out tomorrow. We'll pick it up again Sunday and go until Wednesday night. I hope to have lost at least give pounds; we'll see.

Hot flushes

That's really worrying about your hot flushes Catfish! Does your mood change a lot? Are you still interested in sex or feel like having a break? Everyone has a different response to this transition. They say hormone therapy is the best thing. Don't worry, you're still a man so don't take it too badly.

No, Xingtiao,...

I don't have mood swings like a woman with hot flashes. :-) I think it's diabetes and weight related, unfortunately, but I'm working on both of them.
