Anne of Green Gables DVD

Anne of Green Gables opens with the plights of an orphan, Anne Shirley, who was let out as cheap labor and mistreated by her employer. During this time, on beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, an elderly, but rather spry brother and sister (Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert) realized they were not getting any younger and could use help with farming chores. To this end, they requested a young boy from the orphanage.

Much to Matthew’s surprise, when he arrived at the depot, an 11 year old girl awaited his arrival. Anne was talkative and filled countless fantasies and dreams. During the lengthy ride home, Matthew fell in love with the little girl, even though she was entirely different from him. He was quiet; she talked endlessly.

Whereas Matthew saw the chatty girl as complimentary to his nature, Marilla wasn’t amused in the least, as she dealt in realities. Fantasies and the like held no place in her life. Needless to say, when Matthew presented a girl who would be totally useless to them and one filled with nonsense no less, Marilla had no intentions of keeping her.

Matthew persuaded her to give it a try, which was no small task. Marilla decided on a trial period, during which time a neighbor assured her of the imminent dangers of accepting an orphan. After much deliberation, Anne remained at Green Gables.

In forthcoming years, Anne got into many scrapes and was constantly in the midst of awkward dilemmas, as she was not accustomed to society. Over time, Marilla found it nice to have the girl around and Matthew’s heart was full of love, as he played the role of father, grandfather and friend to Anne.

As Anne matured, she grew in grace, excelled above all and touched the hearts of all that knew her, including young Gilbert Blythe.

This story passes the test of time. Humor, love and tenderness are woven throughout the story in a natural manner to deeply touch our emotions. Although the setting is rural and the time period depicts a bygone era, it is still a riveting story because it takes us back to a time when life was simple— something we long for in today’s rushed world.

This movie can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Children can certainly relate to Anne and the neighbor’s actions parallels those of today’s middle-agers. The senior audience can undoubtedly feel the warmth exuding from Matthew and Marilla.

Anne of Green Gables is a great family movie which can be watched time and again without losing its charm.Technorati Profile
