This passage from Genesis chapter 2 is often interpreted to mean physically, lustfully, in the act of procreation. Speaking from personal experience I can say that this simply isn’t true.
One of the greatest surprises my husband and I had as newlyweds was to learn the true meaning of this verse. We could tell at a glance what each other was thinking, knew instinctively when our spouse needed us, and even felt each other’s pain. I felt the stitches the doctor gave him when we were married barely a week, and he felt the contraction that the pain that pushed me from 4 centimeters to 8 centimeters in one contraction during the course of bringing our first child into the world.
To this day, I need only look in his eyes to know his every thought, and he can be miles away and still know when I’m hurt, physically or emotionally, and will rush to my side. This, I believe, is the true meaning of becoming one flesh.
