And Speaking of Creepy Commercials......

ModelMom's picture

Another blogger posted about a really creepy Skittles commercial the other day (and as soon as I dig up who it was, I will put a link on here....I promise!) and it got me to thinking that there really are quite a few rather disturbing ad campaigns running on the telly lately.

The one that really gets me is the new Volkswagen campaign that shows people in very realistic conversations in their cars getting into severe collisions, only to get out in one piece due to the safety of the car, etc. Anyways, these commercials are pretty disturbing in that they are so realistic. And because I already know that there really are a plethora of horrible drivers on the road, now every time I drive I find myself thinking about those TV spots and I am getting really paranoid, especially when I have my son in the car with me. Thanks to these spots it is now very easy to envision oneself getting into one of these accidents.

The latest spot in this series depicts two women talking about how disturbing the "new VW" commercials are only to kept side-slammed in real time. Yes, these commercials may be effective, but they are also a little graphic for my taste. No blood or guts, but they are rather heartstopping. And I can imagine pretty traumatizing if a small child happens to see one. Nothing is sacred in advertising.

Ohmigod! I totally never thought about a kid watching that commercial you're talking about. but I have seen it and it freaks me out! Allstate Insurance has the same kind of commercials out now too!

You know what other ones really creep me out - those Lemon/Lime Squirt ones. Or maybe they are 7-up. Either way they are so weird and freaky that I can't even watch them. The last one they had on tv featured some dude laying on a medical bed for God only knows what reason. The whole concept behind the commercial is "SubLIMEinal messaging". So every few seconds they snap to a screen shot of a completely different event. Well anyways, suddenly the guys eye gets ripped open and theres a mouth in place of his eyeball or something freaky like that. Eeeeww. I have the shivers just thinking about it.

I just remembered -

It was actually a Sprite commercial. I wonder, do the people who produce these commercials actually think that viewers are going to purchase their products after seeing them? I personally am completely turned off when I see stuff like that. Even in your example from earlier, why would I want to buy a car that always gets in accidents on the commercial? Ya know?

See, I'm on the opposite end

See, I'm on the opposite end fo the spectrum. I would TOTALLY buy that car, because those are hardcore accidents, and they are walking away from them just fine. But the Lymon ads? NO!!!! They are revolting.

I have seen those car accident commercials

They are VERY jarring.

I don't know the other ones you are talking about because I mostly watch TV with my husband, who flips around during commercials, thereby confusing the hell out of me while I try to work and watch at the same time.

Husbands HATE Commercials

realitycheck's picture

Ok, you brought it up, not me so I am going to run with it - WTF if up with men and commercials?
The average commercial break is less than 4 minutes long. Why must they continually flip the station?
My man will watch two shows at the same time, even three shows sometimes, to avoid seeing advertisements. But what kills me is that he wil end up missing parts of each show because he forgwts to flip back. so when we watch tv together I have to say, "Ok, go back" all the time.
Someone should really write a blog on this. This goes hand in hand with that other blog about men not putting the seat down or changing the roll!

I can one up you on that

My husband will occasionally actually forget what he was watching. So I'll finally say, "Weren't you watching X?" He gets irritated when I tell him to go back, but I get irritated when he misses parts of my shows. I only care about House and CSI as far as not wanting to miss a minute, so it shouldn't be that hard.

And Model Mom, my son already watches a ton of TV, and can remove and insert tapes and start them playing by himself. He's not up on the DVD player exactly yet.

Husbands vs. the remote

ModelMom's picture

my husband does the smae thing. and i especially love it when we have one of those rare evenings together on the couch and we are going to watch TV and he flips through every channel at lightening speed....now how the hell are we supposed to figure out what is on the freakin channels if we are just flying by each one!? apparently he can tell if a show is good or not by the blur in between channel changes. very talented.

during the day i never get to see commercials either......the only time the tv is on, a thomas the tank engine DVD must be playing. see.....my son is 2 and already has monopolized the TV. it is hardwired into these men from infancy.
