"I was hoping for a Gore/Obama ticket. I read Obama's book, and the guy is frighteningly intelligent. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice to try the other side of the coin, and actually have the smartest guy in the room be president?'"
So said Steven Van Zandt when discussing why he turned down a role in a Clinton campaign video. You can read the entire article on Hollywood.com here.
Frankly, I had to laugh a little at this one because I've been hearing so many comments like this of late. This weekend I listened to British actress Julie Christi, in a non-political documentary, make a comment about big corporations plotting to get a simpleton elected to the Presidency. She was actually talking about events in the '70s and then said, "Sound familiar?"
My laughter was the kind that you produce when you get caught doing something really dumb and are embarrassed. That's because I believe that the United States has been caught doing dumb things over and over and over for the past 8 years and it seems we are simply so stuck in our rut of doing dumb things that we can't stop ourselves.
What I'm mainly referring to in this post is the constant back-biting and nastiness going on between our two Democratic candidates for the Presidency. Bill Clinton has come out and defended his indefensible behavior citing the support of one of his cronies as proof that he has said nothing out of line. Geraldine Ferraro has defended her indefensible behavior by stating that the same went for her because she was a woman when she was on the ticket with Mondale.
And Obama's camp seems constantly compelled to respond to this bullshit with more bullshit of their own. This has become a race of gender and ethnicity and I fear these two ground-breaking candidates have completely destroyed the chance for the U.S. to have a President elected from the Democratic party this time around.
Hell, whoever wins the Democratic nomination will already have been branded in the majority of households in the U.S. as either an inexperienced numb-nut or a racist bitch.
Senator Obama, you're my man. In my book, you are the more intelligent of the two. So, how's about you prove that and you and your campaign just stop responding to all the BS that the other camp puts out.
Senator Clinton, you're no dummie, either, but you seem to be a very poor manager. How 'bout you take the reins of your campaign and make it clear to your people that remarks regarding race - good, bad or indifferent - have absolutely no place in your campaign. Your people don't have to answer a question about race.
I believe an excellent answer to any question regarding race or gender would be, "I don't think that question has a place in this campaign."
What do ya'll think? I guarantee you, the first person to utter these words would be an instant hero in the eyes of most of the U.S.
