An Intelligent Person in the White House?

Pussy Willow's picture

"I was hoping for a Gore/Obama ticket. I read Obama's book, and the guy is frighteningly intelligent. I thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice to try the other side of the coin, and actually have the smartest guy in the room be president?'"

So said Steven Van Zandt when discussing why he turned down a role in a Clinton campaign video. You can read the entire article on Hollywood.com here.

Frankly, I had to laugh a little at this one because I've been hearing so many comments like this of late. This weekend I listened to British actress Julie Christi, in a non-political documentary, make a comment about big corporations plotting to get a simpleton elected to the Presidency. She was actually talking about events in the '70s and then said, "Sound familiar?"

My laughter was the kind that you produce when you get caught doing something really dumb and are embarrassed. That's because I believe that the United States has been caught doing dumb things over and over and over for the past 8 years and it seems we are simply so stuck in our rut of doing dumb things that we can't stop ourselves.

What I'm mainly referring to in this post is the constant back-biting and nastiness going on between our two Democratic candidates for the Presidency. Bill Clinton has come out and defended his indefensible behavior citing the support of one of his cronies as proof that he has said nothing out of line. Geraldine Ferraro has defended her indefensible behavior by stating that the same went for her because she was a woman when she was on the ticket with Mondale.

And Obama's camp seems constantly compelled to respond to this bullshit with more bullshit of their own. This has become a race of gender and ethnicity and I fear these two ground-breaking candidates have completely destroyed the chance for the U.S. to have a President elected from the Democratic party this time around.

Hell, whoever wins the Democratic nomination will already have been branded in the majority of households in the U.S. as either an inexperienced numb-nut or a racist bitch.

Senator Obama, you're my man. In my book, you are the more intelligent of the two. So, how's about you prove that and you and your campaign just stop responding to all the BS that the other camp puts out.

Senator Clinton, you're no dummie, either, but you seem to be a very poor manager. How 'bout you take the reins of your campaign and make it clear to your people that remarks regarding race - good, bad or indifferent - have absolutely no place in your campaign. Your people don't have to answer a question about race.

I believe an excellent answer to any question regarding race or gender would be, "I don't think that question has a place in this campaign."

What do ya'll think? I guarantee you, the first person to utter these words would be an instant hero in the eyes of most of the U.S.

We could count on our hands the "smart" presidents this country has had in the past 200 years! It does just go to show though that we do have a figure head, much like the Queen of England, The difference is she does serve a purpose, whereas our Mr. Bush does not! He should be ordered to sit in his car and wave to his less than adoring fans as he goes by. One would think that both Obama and Hillary would pause for a second and recognize the fact that the louder their attacks get the more disappointed their followers become. And you are also right in that if they don't knock it off, McCain will win.

Pussy Willow's picture

If only that's all he was, Sassys.

He's done some pretty serious damage for a figure head. But I LOVE the picture of him being forced to sit in his car waving instead of smirking and talking. I can hardly wait for the day when we no longer have to listen to Dubyah talking!

Oh I can listen to him talk PW

It's the sneering I have trouble listening to.

I'd love to agree with you,

but I can't. I think that race and gender DO have a place in this campaign. When I was in high school, a female friend of mine told me that despite my interest in politics, she would never vote for a woman, "because men are supposed to be the leaders." And I am not that old!! It's not like these words were said in the 40's or 50's (1840's or 1850's, maybe)! In Martin Luther's King's famous speech, he said repeatedly, "I have a dream that one day..." In other words, that day had not yet come.

I think it was necessary that Obama address this issue, and by doing so in such a frank and open way, he paved the way for a national dialogue on why rich white men are still the only ones considered fit to run the country. But I think this should be the last time he addresses it on the campaign trail. He has opened the door, but the country is going to have to decide if they are ready for that discussion. I think it is necessary to address because when older women are voting for Clinton and African Americans are voting for Obama, there's still a serious divide that needs to be addressed.

I've heard people condemn Obama because he CHOSE to associate himself with Wright. True, he did. Just as Hillary CHOSE to associate with Bill. Powell CHOSE to associate himself with Bush. In other words, he's not the first person to stick by (but disagree with) a friend with a big mouth. Just as all my friends have done for me. ;) And now that he's addressed it, it's appropriate that he move on. For Clinton, I agree. I think she needs to show that she can provide effective leadership, without becoming that stereotypical "b*tch" that everyone thinks of when they picture a woman in power. There is a happy medium between providing no leadership and going overboard.

I think all Democrats want the party to come together, just so long as everyone else joins their side. lol So I don't see this being resolved anytime soon. But just because it won't be resolved quickly doesn't mean that it can't be resolved respectfully.

And finally, Gore/Obama or Obama/Gore would be one helluva dream team!

Pussy Willow's picture

I agree, IG, in this particular instance.

Actually, I wrote this before I heard that Obama was going to do this speech - on the Rev. Wright issue. And he did a marvelous job of it, from the little that I've heard about it - as I knew he would.

However, I believe that the flack over Rev. Wright would not have been as blown out of proportion as it was if it had not been for the constant carping on race issues previously. Every time they or their campaign members have responded or made a comment about race or gender, Obama and Clinton have just opened the door wider and wider for the press to have a nasty little field day.

No, I don't agree that race and gender have a place in a Presidential campaign. It's about the person who would be best at the job - not about the color of their skin or their gender. Of course, I know I'm tilting at windmills with that stance but that's the way I see it and I wish that was the way more people saw it. I, too, have a dream...

And no shit, Gore/Obama would have been a dream team.

I kind of think it had to happen.

I agree with you that race and gender don't belong in a Presidential campaign. But that doesn't mean they are non-issues. Those two things were going to be issues ever since Clinton and Obama announced they were running. Suddenly, everyone wanted to examine whether we were ready for a female or black President. So what I mean when I say that they don't belong in the campaign is that Hillary should not run as a female candidate and Obama should not run as a black candidate, as if that's their only strength. Because it's not.

You're DEAD ON RIGHT that the door has been opened wider and wider. But to be honest, this wasn't the sort of discussion that would happen the first week in. If Obama came right out at the first and said these things, he would be branded as the "black candidate" rather than a candidate who happens to be black. I think what Obama did today is throw the door wide open. He's addressed it, and now, there's really not a lot of room left to attack him on it.

And tilting at windmills or not, that IS the way it should be. Someday, I hope...

Pussy Willow's picture

You make a very good point, IG.

And I have to say I totally agree, Obama has now addressed the issue and can move on from here.

You're right that, whether I think it's right or not, race and gender are issues to huge numbers of people (backward, living in the dark ages people). Still doesn't change my opinion or wishes on the matter but that is the way it is. But I intend to keep beating my drum whether anyone agrees with me or not. Race and gender have NO PLACE in this election, folks! Ability and whether or not we like the stand that the candidates take on the issues are the issues here.

Here's my answer to the question of whether we are ready for a Black man or a woman to be President. We were apparently ready for a mentally handicapped person (read "moron")to be President - why not a Black man or a woman?

It has more to do with Religion and little to do with Race

Truth is this entire thing has very little to do with Race and more to do with Religion. Religion doing what it should not, with it's tax exempt status, be allowed to do. Obama should have not been attending a church however for 20 years that was preaching such crap. A preacher out of control preaching hate against America, Hate against anyone not black; Like Blacks are the only ones who have felt pain and discrimination in our great nation. I think not!

Obama's church isn't the only one out of line. We have churches across this nation that preaches hate on a daily basis against segments of our communities. Take a look at the American Family Assoc. any day of the week and their battle against the gay community. Their hatred is just as powerful and they do it under the disguise of religion.

Until we deal with the fact that we have allowed religion to run amuck and they no longer represent the love and care of god but rather their own hateful agenda we will continue to feel the pain. I just bet God is reveling in their hypocrisy!

Thank you for visiting American Rhetoric Review

American Rhetoric, I could not have said it better.

I haven't heard what Wright said and, frankly, just didn't want to hear it. This post was actually not written with that incident in mind. But there is absolutely no place in a church for incendiary speeches like Wright has been credited with. Not from Blacks, not from anyone.

What I find the most appalling is that this is a Christian minister who preaches about - or supposedly preaches about - Jesus. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, you know that his message was one of love, mercy and forgiveness - of turning the other cheek - of putting yourself in the other person's shoes - of returning hatred with love. And instead of empowering the congregation through the means that Jesus taught, these churches inflame their congregations with hatred.

If this kind of message is common in Black churches then it is no wonder that we have so many Blacks refusing to live up to their brilliant potential - so many who don't bother to fight for an education, so many who don't bother to work and to strive - to fight for a job or any other opportunity. Hell, they get dumped on by a great portion of society and then they get dumped on in church! And yes, I said they get dumped on in church. Because messages like that only serve to keep you down - they do not uplift, they do not inspire - they simply drag you futher down into the depths of hatred and despair.

As for the white churches preaching this kind of bullshit, words simply elude me. I have only disgust for a ministry that will twist religion and use it against anyone or anything. Everytime I hear some idiot blathering on about the Apocalypse and how the Anti-Christ is comining I tell them he's already here. He's in the churches now, preaching hate.

America may well be a religious society...

but a Christian one? Yeah right! Well you start with a moron and move on. Perhaps a black woman candidate may be the answer. Oprah?
