Amy Grant "Find A Way"
Beginning in 1977, singer Amy Grant had become arguably the most popular act in Contemporary Christian music with a string of smash albums, including a pair that topped that genre's album chart. So it was quite a surprise when the singer, whose previous material had been more gospel-oriented, took a pop direction, adding more electric guitar and keyboards, for her 1984 album Straight Ahead.
The album generated some backlash from her Christian audience, but it also got her some notice from pop and soft rock audiences. In 1985, Grant issued her ninth album, Unguarded, and made a concerted effort at notching success on the pop charts. Although the message was still in Grant's music, it's delivery was less emphasized and the synthesizers and drum programs gave the album a contemporary pop sound.
"Find A Way" was tapped as the lead single and successfully so. Most mainstream pop fans could relate to the upbeat love song and its infectious chorus garnered it airplay on pop and adult contemporary stations. In July, "Find A Way" became Grant's first song to break into the mainstream US Top 40 chart.
"Find A Way" logged six weeks in the Top 40 and though the song only climbed as high as #29, it did manage to become a Top Ten smash on the adult contemporary charts. Three years later, Grant's transformation to full-fledged pop star would be complete as her Lead Me On album would spawn massive pop radio hits with "Baby, Baby" and "Every Heartbeat."
