Airlines Must Hate My Family

airports | damaged luggage | flights | lost luggage

I think my wife and I are cursed as it pertains to our luggage, airports, and the airlines.

As I write this, I'm sitting in yet another hotel room where my luggage didn't show up with me. The lady at baggage claim said it was still in NYC, at LaGuardia, and said they're notorious for losing people's luggage.

Well, they're obviously not alone, and I'm not even sure if it's the airport. It's possibly the different airlines, since today I flew US Air, but the last time my luggage was lost I started on Northwest, transferred to American Airlines, then took an off brand puddle jumper to my final destination.

And the time before that,... well, the time before that they didn't lose my luggage,... they shredded it! I mean, I'd bought a brand new piece of luggage, lovely and pristine, and when it showed up at my destination that bad boy looked like it had grown up in the ghetto. It was tagged by so much chalk that it looked like graffiti; the handle bar that helps you pick up your luggage had been totally snapped off; and a couple of the rivets were gone, with only holes left. Oh yeah, the couple of cut marks were there also, which I guess I should be happy that it wasn't like this other bag I saw on the trolley today; wow!

Ah, but it's not only happening to me. My wife's luggage was lost coming home a couple of weeks ago, and she was on US Air, and a few years ago her luggage was lost when we'd gone to Las Vegas; that was Northwest.

I know these people have a tough job, but come on, pick on someone else. It's a lucky thing I've shown up a day ahead of when I'm expected, but I really do need my bags to show up this evening. Of course all my clothes and toiletries are in there, but so's my medication, my DVD player (which I won't need tonight since the Red Sox game is on), and my external hard drive, which has the powerpoint presentation on it that I'm supposed to be delivering tomorrow night; ugh! That one was a last minute decision to put into the suitcase rather than carry it with me, to avoid those stupid questions by the screeners (what's this; what does it do; how is it used).

Sigh. Oh well, I'm relatively relaxed, if only because of the baseball game and the food I've ordered, plus I'm at a Doubletree, where I got them to give me two cookies. My life is never boring!

so ....what do you do if it

doesn't show up? That doesn't sound good. I cannot understand how airlines can get so careless with other people's luggage. I hope it shows up for you. By the way, who are you rooting for in the game? I got my money(not real money) on the Indians.

Red Sox fan, Ammorton,...

so you know where my loyalties are there, plus I'm happier than you at the present time.

As for the luggage,... Not much I can do except hope it shows up at some point before 8AM; if not, then I start out by registering for the conference, and wait for the stores to open so I can go buy some appropriate clothes for later on. I'd hate to miss any of my conference, but it's most important that I'm ready for my own presentation later.

And I just called on it; it's still lost, 5 hours later. :-(

The absolute worse experience I heard was

Sassys

This lady I worked with at the airport once had her luggage sent to Europe and did not get it back until a full year later...she had American Airlines to thank for that:(
Some are pretty bad but A.A takes the cake...I used to have to wait for customers while they in turn waited for their luggage...not fond memories.

At least this time, Sassys,...

they didn't lose my luggage on the return trip. However, after the first plane circled NYC for about 30 minutes, I ran to the other end of the airport, only to learn that they had canceled my flight, then they rebooked me and that one left almost an hour late also. Weasels; at least I'm finally back home!

lost luggage

oh no! i am so sorry! that is always one of my fears when i travel. you depend on having all that stuff make it out to your destination with you! when i was still traveling abroad for work i would tie a huge colorful ribbon to the handle so nobody would accidentally think it was theirs and then have 2 luggage tags on it along with a flashcard sized piece of paper duct taped to the area next to the handle with just the destination airport/city on it. never lost a bag but man, i decorated those puppies like a crazy person.

i hope you get your bags back soon! my friend is in NY waiting for her bags that got lost too. amazing.

Yes ModelMom,...

I did finally get my bags at 4:30 in the morning; that was close! The best thing was that I carry my laptop with me, so my presentation wasn't lost. Still, it might have been fun standing in front of those business people wearing sweats and sneakers. :-)
