In a classic move the United States Congress is working on a bill that would address the home mortgage crises. True to the American Way the bill provides for the classic solutions. Banks, homebuilders and mortgage companies are to receive help to the tune of 25 billion. Homeowners about to lose their home’s would receive credit counseling. Additionally, 4 billion would be set aside for cities to purchase foreclosed homes and resell them.
This appears to be a perfect American solution to most social problems. Reward big business for pulling one over the little people and at the same time counsel the little people into accepting that it’s their fault.
Banks, homebuilders and mortgage companies will receive money because they had the good sense to trick common people into signing on to an unconscionable contract written by unscrupulous lawyers working for the banks, homebuilders and mortgage companies.
On the other hand those people, with no real knowledge of contract law, that signed each document in a closing where they were not given time to read the documents, in a closing where the closing agent said “sign here”, that signed on to these lopsided contracts will be given counseling. Between the counseling and losing their home these consumers should be much better citizens, even if they do have to live in a homeless street shelters for a while.
I can’t help but notice that this solution is much the same as that provided by most televangelists and to an extent some pastors. They exhort the viewing audience to send in their money. Yet when one of the members gets ill they don’t send money for the Doctor bill or hospital bill. NO. They say I will pray for you. I will pray that you get well so you can pay your bills.
As April 15 approaches I am thinking about sending in my prayers and making myself available to counsel our government on the virtues of living within our budget. I think that’s a lot more valuable than any amount of money I might send in.
Maybe it’s time to remind our servants in congress, it’s “GOVERNMENT OF THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE.
