Acne is the most common skin disease, affecting 90% of adolescents and many adults. For about 70% of adolescents, the condition clears up on its own after 4-5 years, leaving permanent scarring. The remaining 30% will continue to suffer through to adulthood.
Acne is an inflammatory skin disease arising from abnormal response to hormonal changes. At puberty, the increased levels of male hormone (present in both men and women), androgen, causes the sebaceous glands to secrete too much sebum. A blockage in the pore occurs when excess sebum is mixed with skin cells. A type of bacteria normally present on the skin, called P. acnes, multiplies rapidly in the clogged pore and causes inflammation, swelling and redness. Stress affects hormone production and thus, exacerbates acne.
The conventional treatment, centred on long-term oral and topical drugs, has provided unsatisfactory cure. A study from Leeds University revealed that resistance to antibiotics for both oral and topical applications has increased from 30% in 1992 to 70% in 1997. Roaccutane (a vitamin A derivative) is the treatment of choice for severe acne. Although the drug is effective for some, it provides temporary relief for others and its severe side effects include dry eyes and lips, liver damage, birth defects and depression.
Nlite laser was initially developed for facial rejuvenation. It has the ability to reduce wrinkles, laughter lines and crow’s feet. Due to the lack of satisfactory acne cure, it is understandable why Nlite laser is hailed as the major breakthrough in acne treatment. According to Dr Chu, Nlite laser is the first major advance in acne treatment in over 30 years. He is a consultant dermatologist and founder of the Acne Support Group UK, who conducted trials into Nlite for treating acne. Following a single treatment, improvement was seen at 2-4 weeks. After 12 weeks, 87% of patients reported significant improvement
Nlite treatment is non-invasive, pain free and has minimal side effects. Following treatment, no after care is required and you can go out in the sun immediately.
Nlite laser emits a pulsed beam of yellow light that, when absorbed by the skin, generates heat. This encourages the release of chemicals that stimulate the skin’s natural healing response and the production of oxygen, which is toxic to bacteria. Nlite laser also stimulates the skin to produce natural collagen, the substance that plumps up the skin and softens acne scars.
