Absolute Write: An Excellent Website for Freelancers

Since I spend at least some of my time looking at websites for writers, I try to recommend ones that are helpful in one way or another. I'll try not to ruin the links like I did before (it's fixed now by the way). This one was first mentioned to me a few years ago by writer friend whose book I was proofreading. She mentioned that Absolute Write was a website she used often, and there are a lot of experienced and knowledgeable writers posting on their forum. I looked at it but never came back to it. On another forum, a few weeks ago I saw it mentioned again. This time I gave it a fair chance. I found it to be a wealth of information and services for writers. I'm going to break it down a bit because not all of the information and resources are free.

Free Stuff

I know a lot of people don't like paying for information on the web, and since I haven't tried any of their paid subscriptions and services, I'm going to focus on the free information and then let you know what other services they charge for. Absolute Write is full of free information including articles, interviews with writers of certain specializations, links, and of course the ever popular forums. I'll provide links to some highlights and let you find your way from there.

Articles: The site is divided up into sub-categories like freelance writing, novel writing, etc., and each sub-category has an articles section. The link I've listed is from the freelance writing section, where there are many articles on different aspects of freelance writing.

Links
: This too is from the freelance writing section. I love websites that provide links to other sites. If you do a search for “writing or “freelance writing, you'll get thousands of results and not all of them completely relevant. The links on this site are recommended by other writers.

Forums: This is probably what this site is most known for. It has thousands of members, and enough discussions to cover just about anyone's interest in writing. I've just signed up recently and haven't had time to post yet, but I've looked a t a number of the discussions. It looks pretty good.

There are other free features of the site, but this is an overview of highlights not a guidebook. Check them out and let me know what you think.

Other Services

These are the services you have to pay for. They offer writing “classes and software (I won't go into my thoughts on “writing software now, maybe another time). There are two Absolute Markets newsletters, a free version and a paid subscription. It's obvious that the paid version is a bit better, but based on the sample versions of the newsletters offered. There are also links available to different services available to writers. The links can be accessed for free, but if you want to post a link to your website there, you have to pay a fee.

That went longer than I originally planned. I hope you'll find this overview helpful.

This is good information. I do a lot of freelance writing, and another good source is (www.freelancewriting.com). There's a lot of information on this site, along with some good writing opportunities. Another source that comes to mind is (www.craigslist.com). You can go to a city of choice and scroll down to the writing/edit link--and see what comes up.

There are good money making opps in owning a writing business. That's the next step for me. I haven't done bad writing part-time, but it's time to hit the next level and to let go of the nine to five completely. I'd be mighty obliged (and I'm sure others would be too) if you could break down the whole concept of search engine optimization: and more importantly how Google has changed their policy of requiring site owners to rotate and create fresh content on a regular basis.

These are opportunities waiting to happen for those that can write good keyword content. I'm curios, what is your take on the blog culture?

I too use freelancewriting.com, and I wrote a review of that site too, although like any public job board, the jobs are not always llegitimate. I too am only writing part time at the moment, and I'm not sure that I'm the best person to ask about search engine optimization. There are some good blogs here about keywords. Do a search. I know theclassy1 has a good one.

I'm not sure what you meant by my take on blog culture. I've only been blogging for a few months, and I only read the blogs here as well as blogs of good friends. As far as making money blogging, it seems a bit slow, but that might be the nature of the beast.

Thanks for your comments.
