A little while back I entered the arena of the freelance writer. A bit late in the day I might add. It's not full time yet so I combine it with a bit of teaching and consultancy research. Fine, you might think, and it is a lot of laughs, but things have been rather different this week.
Everyone has heard of Wahms, well I am a Wahg, or work at home granny. During the school holidays my older grandchildren use my house as a pit stop, or a place to chill, we've become a regular take away. I've learned to deal with that and fit my work around their pop ins unless I'm out teaching, or interviewing someone for a project. On those occasions my husband deals with the interruptions.
This last week has been a bit different. My middle daughter and her partner were going away for a well earned break, so I have had their seven year old for the week.
As any one who has been a mother or is a grandmother will tell you, having kids pop in, or stop for a night is quite different to having one there 24/7. I had forgotten how exhausting seven year olds can be, particularly when you are trying to work. The upshot has been that I have spent most of this week going to bed about 4am, because when the youngster is asleep is the best time to work, and getting up again at 8.
By the end of the week I find myself one very weary wahg.
Much as I love my grandchildren, little and often is great. Full time when I'm trying to work is stretching things nowadays. Sheer willpower had me playing cards, running round parks, swinging on swings, walking the dog etc. Which just goes to show that where there's a will there's a wahg.
