In the darkness of the foggy city...
A shadowy stranger strolled nonchalantly along the wet pavement. It was
long past midnight, but it had been a busy evening for him and he just
wanted a place to settle down for a bit and fetch a favourite drink
before the dawn rose. Far away, the eerie calls of a lighthouse foghorn
broke the silence that enshrouded his journey. Stray cats occasionally
could be heard fighting in and about the many alleyways he passed.
Nearer to his destination, he caught the smell of the air, a mixture of
seaweed, water and oily residues. He soon looked upon his locale, a
waterfront alley that housed various businesses and a nightclub venue.
Heading for the nightclub door, he rapped and waited for a response. A
burly doorman hesitated but for a moment upon sight of who asked for
entry, and bowing, let the stranger in.
At first, he noted, all was quiet but for a low level radio playing
behind the bar area. Then as his eyes adjusted to the dimness of the
club, he saw that, there were others also present. he calmly walked over
to the bar, gathering the attention of its caretaker, a busty female.
"What's your pleasure?" she asked demurely.
"Bloodwine" he replied.
"It's rather late for such a specialty in this venue." she said."My stock
hasn't been replenished recently".
The stranger regarded the caretaker carefully. He glanced at the other
guests, noting that everyone else seemed to have been preoccupied prior
to his arrival, and were rather sleepy a bit. He glanced back at the
caretaker.
"Do all these guests of your establishment patronize this place
regularly?" he asked.
She smiled brightly,"Most of them do, yes."
"That shall be their undoing then" he said and moved calmly towards the
centre of the room, while attracting everyone's curious attention.
The caretaker looked taken aback for a moment, unsure as to the
stranger's comment or intent." Just who the hell are you?!" she said
challengingly.
He whispered something inaudibly low, in a strange foreign language, and
at first, the caretaker looked shocked, as if she were seeing a ghost.
Then she warily backed away. The others, who had likewise heard what had
been spoken also retreated into the darker recesses of the room. The
caretaker gathered up her courage and slowly stepped forward then bowed
before the stranger.
"Forgive my manners, my lord." she said.
"It has been a very long time, I estimate. Memories tend to fade over
time as yours obviously has. Your young too." he said, glancing at the
others.
"We had heard of rumours, but no one had taken them so seriously..."
He smiled, noting her uneasiness. "Till now,...the old world was becoming
too retro for my liking so I came to this world to experience its
decadence. Seems though, here too lies a varience of sport And fleeing
shadows in my midst".
"Your wishes are our commands, my lord. You have but to ask any of us."
she said.
"A quality which would cost you dearly in my own lands." he said.
Rousing themselves, everyone relaxed in his presence when they realized,
he wasn't going to harm them. He noted their curiousity for a moment.
Most interesting indeed, he thought. He had slept too long.
"If there is no bloodwine available now, I shall return again another
time, perhaps." he said and ventured towards the door. The caretaker and
her guests all gasped, then warily looked at each other as he exited the
venue. This particular night, they would never forget. for they had seen
what only had been spoken of in legends and whispered rumours...of a dark
lord, who only roused when the time was given unto him, through his
heart.
The group all just sat, awe struck and dumbfounded, then realized grimly,
this must be his time...in their own age...and that someone had roused
his soul to awakening...a lover.
They slowly began to all smile...their kingdom had finally arrived.
Deep into the twilight, the stranger strolled through the city...he too
was happy. Things would be different, but at least, he knew, she
lived...somewhere.
He just had to find her. ~
