A Story of Perseverance
There is a story of perseverance that is inspiring. It involves an American athlete of the Paralympic Games. The Paralympic Games are for athletes that have physical disabilbites compared to the special Olympics that are for the intellectually impaired. In other words, these athletes are amputees, have spinal injuries or are confined to wheelchairs. Nancy Burpee is a world class paralympic swimmer. Although she set world records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle at the trials held in Minneapolis, Minnesota , Ms. Burpee was disqualified by an Australian referee on a procedural technicality.
Ms. Burpee sought legal representation to from Simmons, Jannace & Stagg. They argued that the Australian referee showed bias against Ms. Burpee by making various comments indicating that the Australian referee did not want Ms. Burpee competing against an Australian paralympic swimmer. Simmons, Jannace & Stagg also demonstrated that the United States Paralympic swim trials were not held in accordance with the paralympic rules. Unfortunately, the independent arbitrator ruled against her. Despite all the controversy and adversity surrounding her, she has continued to do what she loves. Ms. Burpee is still competing and excelling despite the ugly side of conpetition she has encountered. Ms. Burpee will compete in the World Championships in the upcoming year.
Ms. Burpee's life is inspring and demonstrates that life can be hard, but perseverance and dedication cannot stop you from what you want to achieve. Although there were people that stopped her from competing at the Paralympic Games, she has continued to show she is an excellent athlete. Her spirit is undefeated...
