A quirk of nature -truth is stranger than fiction some times.

A two year old girl born with four arms and legs in northern India, is set to undergo extensive surgery in southern India to remove those extra limbs.

The girl, named Lakshmi allegedly after the Hindu God of wealth, is joined to a ’parasitic twin’, who stopped developing in the womb.

The surviving foetus absorbed parts of the undeveloved foetus. This extremely rare condition is known as isciopagus. Some villagers in the northern state of Bihar revere her as a goddess.

A team of 30 doctors will be involved in the extensive surgery in Banglalore. The complications are myriad: two spines have merged; she has four kidneys; entangled nerves; two stomach cavities and two chest cavaties. She cannot stand or walk.

Update: It appears the little girl's operations have been successful - just have to wait and see how she recovers. It would have been a real ordeal for her.

I saw this yesterday, Hutt

according to the news here she'll go through a lot, but they expect that she will be able to walk on her own. The poor little thing! It's hard to imagine just how frightend her parents must be!

I saw this earlier

on the news. She is expected to be okay, but I can't begin to imagine what she will be going through.

I saw it last night our time...

she was what they used to call a Siamese twin - but her twin had no head.Shocking really. It may take a bit of transplanting to make sure she has all the good bits.

it makes me think

of another Stephen King book called The Dark Half. All about a writer who - as a child - doctors discovered he'd had a twin that absorbed into him. They removed teeth and bits of hair, etc. Then, as an adult, that twin became the "darker half" of himself. It's kind of creepy to think about. Twins, when they lose one, generally have problems even if they don't know they ever lost a sibling! It makes me wonder if this girl will grow up feeling she's lost something or being a lonely person. I hope not.

Poor little thing...It's hard enough in this life working with what God gave us. I hope the little bugger gets healthy soon.
