A prevention not a cure for HIV- Aids...

A prevention not a cure! Thats what this post is all about!

Truvaro, a combination of Tenofovir (Virear)and Emtrictabine, or FTC (Emtriva), sold by Gilead Sciences (the company that invented the Bird Flu drug,Tamiflu)may soon have a a pill that could prevent HIV, the virus that causes AIDS!

This drug is described as the first thing seen that could have a prevention impact. If it is as successful as expected, it could be distributed quickly to blunt the epidemic. It would be a prevention not a cure! It would be a lifesaver!

If larger tests show that the drugs are as effective as on test monkeys, this could be given to people with the highest risks of HIV - men having sex with men, and heterosexuals who have contracted the disease overseas.

Condoms and counselling have obviously not been enough - HIV infects ten people a minute - or five million a year.Up to now a vaccine remains the best hope. The drug could be used with practice of safe sex.The drug would stop the virus from reproducing, unlike vaccines which work to boost the immune system.

The drugs are presently being used to protect healthcare workers. There has not been any discussion to how the drug would be prescribed to gay man and other patients in the future?
