A Bittersweet Thanksgiving

day of mourning | thansksgiving

I love Thanksgiving its a wonderful holiday. It's also a day of mounring for many natives. Being half its sort of a bittersweet day for me. I enjoy hanging out with relatives and eating and preparing food. I use to go out and protest but after being maced and being hit with a Police baton I choose not to any more. I use to sit on the couch and watch my relatives fuss over who makes the best candied sweet potatoes, while the men argue over football. I can't help to think did we miss something, is there more to this hoilday. Are we so caught up in the happiness of Thanksgiving that its too difficult to think about Native people and the struggles that we went through- or am I just being a downer?
