I know we're all supposed to embrace other cultures, but there's just some stuff that I struggle to understand, let alone embrace.
So goes this story of an 8 year old who had to be formally granted a divorce. Seems the parents married her off to a 30 year old man, who then proceeded, over the next 2 months, to routinely beat and have sex with her. She told her parents about her treatment, but they didn't do anything, saying she was legally the other man's wife.
One day she finally figures a way to leave, makes it out, gets a lawyer, and petitions the judge for a divorce. The judge takes his time, then decides she's earned the divorce.
Why did she get the divorce? First, it's legal for families to marry off children younger than age 15. Also, it would seem that it's also legal for husbands to beat their wives, to a degree. But what wasn't totally legal is that by their law the man wasn't allowed to have sex with the girl until she reached puberty.
Now, part two. Not only does this man NOT go to jail for either reason, but the judge said the family had to pay him the equivalent of $250 for HIS troubles.
And that was that; no further explanations. Somebody please tell me how we're supposed to embrace all of this.
